2000年9月に銀塩のα-7と同時発売されたコンパクトな広角－中望遠ズームレンズ。 従来のAF24-85mmF3.5-4.5の14枚構成のレンズより2枚少ない12枚構成としながらもテレ側を105mmまで伸ばしつつよりコンパクトな設計になっている。重量もごくわずかながら軽量化された。
この時期の標準ズームとしては一般的な描写である。現在のようにピクセル等倍表示による画質評論が当たり前の時代にあっては、解像度が素晴らしいとか収差がどうのという話題では評価しづらいレンズであるが、ミノルタらしいボケ味や暖かみという点では、デジタルに移行して以降の標準ズーム(DT18-70, DT18-55, DT16-105など）よりむしろ有利である。
逆光には強くないが広角端から望遠端まで破綻の少ない落ち着いた描写を得られるので、極端な広角やテレ側の画角を望まなければこのレンズ1本で大抵のことはこなせる。
