*AF 85mm F1.4 G
1987年からある、ミノルタを代表する中望遠ポートレート用の単焦点レンズ。1993年にGレンズとして名称を変え、懸案だったフォーカスリングが太く改善され一気に評価が上がった。実際にGレンズとなった以降も被写界深度の浅さから、MF操作でのデリケートなピント合わせは必須であり、旧型のフォーカスリングとAF精度では十分に対応できなかったといわれる。
このレンズが出るまでのGレンズは、ミノルタがライカ風の味を求めていたために解像度を重視する傾向がやや見られたが、その後の新レンズでボケ味重視という路線に切り替わる旗印となったエポックメーキング的な存在でもあった。
初期型からボケの美しい円形絞りを採用。描写はピントの合った部分のシャープな切れ味と、なだらかに階調する綺麗なボケ味が共存する見事なもの。このボケ味を演出するうえで、MTF曲線の円周方向より放射方向の解像度を無段階で徐々に落とすなどの工夫がなされており、単にシャープなだけでは得られない、立体的な構図のポートレートが容易に撮れる。撮影時には絞り開放とせず１段絞ってF2とするのが最も美味しい。
APS-Cサイズの撮像素子を搭載したデジタル一眼レフでは127.5mm相当になるが、最低撮影距離85cmという使いやすい距離と相まって、ポートレート撮影での使い勝手に大きな差はない。単焦点ならではの軽快なAF動作も撮影のテンポを心地よくしてくれる。ただし室内撮りでの画角の使いやすさからAF 50mm F1.4のほうを好む人も多いことを付記しておく。
2000年には距離エンコーダが搭載された(D)タイプとなったのと合わせて、フォーカスリングが従前よりも幅広に、またAFクラッチの搭載でAF時に回転しないよう改良された。
2001年には15年前の開発時に大振りなためボツ企画となったAF85mmF1.4G(D)Limitedが発売され、この焦点域でのαレンズの評価は不動のものとなった。
